Mica Taping Service

Conductor taping for fire resistant cables

80 km/día Daily capacity
1200°C Fire resistance

Fire protection directly on the conductor

Mica taping applies a fire protection barrier directly onto the copper conductor before insulation extrusion. This mica layer allows the cable to maintain circuit integrity during a fire, ensuring operation of critical systems such as alarms, emergency lighting, ventilation and elevators for the time required by applicable standards.

Available Mica Types

Muscovite Mica

750 - 950 °C
Property FR80M28
Thickness 0,110 ± 0,02 mm
Tape weight 128 ± 15 g/m²
Mica content 80 ± 5 g/m²
Glass content 28 ± 2 g/m²
Dielectric strength ≥ 1,3 kV/layer
Tensile strength ≥ 100 N/10mm
Fire resistance 750 - 950 °C
When to choose: Calcined muscovite mica offers good cost-performance ratio for applications where test temperature does not exceed 950°C.

Phlogopite Mica

up to 1000 °C
Property FR90P28 FR120P28 FR160P28
Thickness 0,100 ± 0,02 mm 0,120 ± 0,02 mm 0,150 ± 0,02 mm
Tape weight 135 ± 10 g/m² 171 ± 11 g/m² 206 ± 11 g/m²
Mica content 90 ± 5 g/m² 125 ± 5 g/m² 160 ± 5 g/m²
Glass content 28 ± 2 g/m² 28 ± 2 g/m² 28 ± 2 g/m²
Dielectric strength ≥ 1,0 kV/layer ≥ 1,2 kV/layer ≥ 1,5 kV/layer
Tensile strength ≥ 100 N/10mm ≥ 100 N/10mm ≥ 100 N/10mm
Fire resistance up to 1000 °C up to 1000 °C up to 1000 °C
When to choose: Phlogopite mica withstands higher temperatures (up to 1000°C) and offers greater flexibility. Indicated when standards require tests at higher temperatures or longer exposure times.

Tape Grades

Standard

General taping

High quality

High-speed taping, small conductor cross-sections

High quality grade ensures smooth taping process at high speeds, especially valued for small conductor cross-sections where tension and overlap control is more demanding.

Taping Process

01

Vertical configuration

Vertical double-column configuration: allows taping two conductors simultaneously per line, doubling effective capacity.

02

Tape orientation

Mica is applied with the mica paper side in direct contact with copper. This orientation ensures the protection barrier is closest to the conductor.

03

Layers

Single or double layer according to test standard requirements and conductor cross-section.

Tape Composition

Component Function
Mica paper Main thermal barrier (750-1000°C)
Alkali-free glass fabric Mechanical reinforcement, tensile strength
Silicone resin Impregnation, flexibility, interlayer adhesion

Common properties:

  • Free of halogens and toxic gases
  • Excellent electrical insulation properties at high temperature
  • Flexibility and tensile strength for high-speed taping

Reference Standards

Mica taping enables cables to comply with circuit integrity standards in case of fire. The most common standards are IEC 60331 (circuit integrity), EN 50200 (fire resistance with mechanical shock) and BS 6387 (fire, water and mechanical shock resistance). Selection of mica type, thickness and number of layers depends on the specific standard the cable must meet.
